Ferguson and Hammock Equine Hospital

Welcome to the home page for Ferguson and Hammock Equine Hospital located in Ocala, Florida. The hospital and Ocala are located just 35 miles south of the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, 65 miles north of Orlando and Disney World, and 60 miles west of famous Daytona Beach. Ocala and its surrounding area (Marion County) are the epitome of horse country. The USDA recently ranked Marion County as the top county in the nation in regard to the actual number of horses (17,205). Ocala is the premier area in the world for breaking and training young thoroughbred racehorses. There are an estimated 7000 horses here in training on a yearly basis, and over 900 horse farms, with all breeds represented. The area plays host to such noted equine events as the Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS), the CAI Live Oak (a combined driving event), the Florida Horse Park Festival, and the Sunshine State Games Equestrian Classic.

Practice Philosophy

Although the practice tends to the needs of any and all horses in the area, there is no doubt that its main focus is on the thoroughbred, and particularly the training thoroughbred. The practice takes care of over 2500 training horses annually; this includes not only local horses, but also examinations at local sales and regional sales in Kentucky, Maryland, and New York. In addition, the practice takes care of over 800 broodmares, with accompanying foals and yearlings. Clients include some of the nations leading breeders and trainers. There is also a substantial number of other sport horses (e.g. hunter-jumpers) cared for, as well as the “backyard” horse. Although the practice works on some of the finest and most expensive horses in the nation, our philosophy has always been to take care of any horse in need, and to do as much as possible to give it the best care possible. The practice´s motto is “For the Sake of the Horse.”
